Cell Phones

Children and Cell Phones

The tremendous growth of the number of children who use cell phones has been a revolution of sorts.  Never before have so many of our young people been so accessible by their peers and the peer pressures that go along with childhood and adolescence.  The controversy surrounding this issue has also grown.

The SAR (specific absorption rate) for electromagnetic radiation exposure is set based on an adult male 180 pounds; our children come nowhere close to that body size or body weight.  So, what affect is the electromagnetic radiation having on these small bodies?
The electromagnetic fields that naturally surround the human body serve a purpose, especially in the bodies of developing children.  Does the use of cell phones short circuit these natural electromagnetic fields?

When you combine the two issues that create problems, over-accessibility and electromagnetic radiation exposure, maybe children with cell phones is not such a tremendously wonderful idea.  Reaching a happy medium may be the most difficult task we face in the coming cell phone saturation.

We love the benefit that children with cell phones can provide for parents trying to work and stay in touch with their children, but we should also be concerned for the situations that are created when children with cell phones are easily reached by outside influences that may not be healthy.

The coupling of the electromagnetic radiation exposure, along with excessive time spent on the cell phone may mean that these developing young adolescents are receiving dangerous doses of radiation that can have devastating consequences for them.

How do we make the decision to allow our children to use cell phones?  This decision must be made on an individual basis and with some thought given to the need for communication with the children, and the balance of responsible cell phone use.
